Little Ways To Take Care Of Yourself

I'm a huge believer in self care being the most important thing, always. It must always be your priority to prioritise your own mental health and well-being because, at the end of the day, you are the person you're going to have to live with for the rest of your life.
We spend so much time worrying about others and attempting to care for them but that can sometimes be detrimental to our own happiness and drain us of our own happiness as we pour so much of ourselves into those around us. Making others feel good about themselves is great but it counts for nothing if you yourself aren't happy. Its like when flight attendants tell you to put your own oxygen mask on before helping someone else. You can't really help anyone else properly unless you sort yourself out first and what good are you to others if they're totally happy but the person who made them happy isn't?
Taking care of yourself doesn't have to be a huge deal and it isn't always about physical health because your mental health is just as important. There are many little, mundane things you can do each day to ensure you're healthy, energised and in a positive mindset so I want to share a few with you. Do these easy peasy things and you'll be well on your way to taking care of yourself.

1) Drink water
Are you drinking enough water? Ensure you stay hydrated at all times.

2) Get enough sleep
I know, I know, the internet is so distracting but, trust me, get a few extra hours in and you'll thank me for it the next day.

3) Write down your thoughts - good and bad
Your head doesn't have to be the only place for your thoughts to live. Write down the good ones so you can look back and remember them and write down the bad ones so you can get them out of your brain and forget about them.

4) Take time to breathe each morning before rushing out of bed
Don't hurry up each morning, just take a few minutes to remind yourself that you're alive and take some deep breaths to prepare yourself for the day ahead.

5) Organise your time
Create schedules and write lists so you don't have to stress yourself out when doing everything last minute. Prioritise tasks.

6) Do some exercise
I'm not telling you to join your local gym or do 500 squats every morning but just make sure you keep moving!

7) Communicate with your loved ones
Tell people how you're feeling, build bridges, or just chat to them about your day. Human beings rely on social interaction to survive.

8) Make time for play
Don't overwork yourself, ensure you have time to do the things that make you smile.

9) Get some fresh air
The internet is great but the outernet is better.

10) Eat well...
Eat your greens, make sure you're getting all the nutrients you need to keep you full of energy and feeling good on the inside.

11) but make time for junk food
Because life is all about balance!

12) Give yourself a pep talk
Look in the mirror every once in a while and tell yourself that you're strong, independent, beautiful and capable of anything. It doesn't always need to be other people building us up.

13) Dream big
Have things to aspire to and never feel guilty for aiming high. Give yourself goals to work towards and use them as motivation.

13) Take baths
Take time to have a good old soak every so often. The bath is the perfect place to relax.

14) Use scented things
Smelly candles, perfumes, bath bombs, I don't know, just surround yourself with beautifully scented things that will bring you serenity.

15) Practise saying 'no'
You are under no obligation to do anything which will make you unhappy so practise saying 'no' to things that you don't want to do and which you're only doing for the sake of other people.

16) Listen to music
Whatever music you're into, whether its hardcore rock, old school country or r&b, listen to it and allow it to take you to a place. Music is art and art is escapism.

17) Cry
Sometimes, you just need to let it all out and it can do the world of good. Don't harbour all the sadness inside of you!

18) Read
Just like music, books and words can be a form of therapy. Read to educate yourself, to entertain yourself and to calm yourself.

19) Create
Everyone has a creative streak so unleash yours, whether you like painting, drawing, writing, photographing, keep your hands busy and invent something new!

What little things do you do to take care of yourself? <3

Love, Emily :) xx
